My level is not good, can I still participate?
Yes! All levels are catered for. Language Exchange Ireland events are fun, easy-going and casual. The person opposite you is usually in the same situation as you. People come to help each other! So whether you are an absolute beginner or fluent in the language you are learning you can participate. We’ll provide you with a pen and paper to get started!
Is it speed dating?
No. We use the speed dating system for the language exchanges, which means one side of the table there are English speakers and on the other side native speakers of a different language depending on the section. You speak 5mins in English and then 5mins in the other language before moving to the next table. However, you never know who you will meet. We have had lots of relationships form at the events!
What do I need to talk about?
Whatever you want! It is a very easy going environment… we also put conversation topics on the tables to help you out.
How long does it take?
We start signing people in from 6.20pm and usually have everyone seated by 6.50pm. There is a 10-15 minute break at 7.45pm with free food and then we start up again and finish at 8.30pm. Lots of people stay around after that for a chat and a drink!
What does the cost include?
For just €5 you participate in an organized language exchange and get food too as we serve finger food during the break.
What ages attend the exchanges?
We have a big mix of ages coming to the events each week. People range from 18 years old to 85 years old. The majority of people would be in their late 20’s. We get about 50% female and 50% male. You must be over 18 years old to attend.
What happens if there is an imbalance in the numbers?
Thankfully the balance is usually very good and we operate on a 1 v 1 basis. If there is a case where we have more of one language then we do 2 v 1’s. We never do more than 3 v 1’s.
